BERKSHIRE will be aiming to extend their remarkable unbeaten Unicorns Championship record when they complete their Western Division fixtures against Dorset at Wargrave in a three-day game starting on Sunday (11am).
They have not lost in this competition since August 2014, a run spanning 32 games. Along the way they have won the national play-off final on three occasions and will be aiming for a record-equalling fourth-straight title when they take on the Eastern Division champions – who will be either Norfolk or Staffordshire – at Banbury CC on September 15-18.
Their bid to win all six league games for the second successive year came to an end last week when they were held to a draw by Cornwall at St Austell, so skipper James Morris and his side will be looking to return to winning ways against Dorset, who have their sights on finishing runners-up in the division.
Third-placed Dorset are also unbeaten this season, with two wins and three draws leaving them just one point behind Oxfordshire, who currently hold second spot, which means there will be plenty at stake at Wargrave next week.
Last Sunday, Dorset finished runners-up in the Minor Counties Twenty20 final played at Wormsley. In the semi-final, they scored 138 to beat Lincolnshire by 11 runs, but crashed to Hertfordshire in the final by nine wickets after making only 104-9 with opener Felix Organ remaining unbeaten on 48 from 49 balls.
Berkshire are at the same Stokenchurch venue today (Wednesday), playing Cumberland in the KO Trophy final, which they last won two years ago.
Their team included Finchampstead skipper Dan Lincoln and Wokingham's in-form batsman Archie Carter.
Last Thursday Berkshire 2nds lost by four wickets to Gloucestershire Academy at Henley.
Matt Rowe, the former Cornwall skipper now playing for Berkshire, top-scored with 68 and Henley teammate Andy Rishton made 34 as the hosts completed their 50 overs with 229-8. The visitors reached their target off the first ball of the penultimate over with Ollie Price making 82 and Daaryoush Ahmed 49 not out.
Hamza Arif took 2-33 off seven overs and Euan Woods 2-52 from 10.
