SLOUGH captain Max Miles hailed his side’s heart and desire as outstanding after a 26-19 win against rivals Marlow on Saturday.
The Greenies trailed 19-0 midway through the first half in the Southern Counties North derby match at Tamblyn Fields.
However, an incredible fightback saw them turn the tables on Marlow and secure the win with a try in the final play of the game.
Miles told the Observer: “We were very slow out of the blocks in the first half and defensively we didn’t move fast enough or put pressure on the ball.
“Their winger scored a hat-trick of tries in the first 20 minutes.
“We had a few choice words behind the posts after their third try, then for the rest of the first half we kept them at bay and got into half-time at 19-6.
“We had more words at the break and I don’t remember Marlow being in our 22 in the second half.
“Our defence was outstanding and we pressured them into making mistakes.
“We managed to get a few phases together towards the end and scored the winning try in the last play of the game.”
Slough secured their second win this season thanks to tries from Bryon Richmond and Colby Short, while Miles was successful with both conversion attempts and booted four penalties.
The Greenies skipper continued: “Marlow came down big on confident as table toppers at the time, and for us it was a chance to gauge where we are in this division.
“Marlow were high on confidence and expected to beat us, but our heart and desire in the second half was outstanding.
“It was a topsy-turvy game but it’s always nice to win a derby match.”
Slough travel across Berkshire to Reading this Saturday (3pm) and Miles is expecting another tough game despite their hosts losing all three matches so far this season.
He said: “Reading lost quite badly to Marlow at the start of the season but then only by a point last weekend, so they’re finding their feet.
“Our confidence is high as we believe we can go to Reading and win, but it will be another tough game.
“It’s all pointing in the right direction for us but we’re still not starting games to well at the moment.”
