SLOUGH TOWN joint-manager Jon Underwood told of his delight after watching his team reward a sell-out Arbour Park with a 2-1 win against Hayes & Yeading United on Monday.

The Rebels are still adapting to their new home, and it was far from a vintage performance from a side that has flown out of the blocks this season.

However, roared on by over 1,400 fans on an emotional homecoming day, Slough recovered from falling a goal behind to secure all three points.

Securing a victory was the most important thing in the eyes of Underwood, who believes Rebels chairman Steve Easterbrook and loyal supporters deserved to celebrate three points on their return to the borough.

He told the Observer: “I’m absolutely delighted for the fans and for Steve for all the work he has done to get us back here.

“I wasn’t a classic game and I don’t think we played at our best. We had some good spells but the important thing was getting the win.

“It was such a great turnout and the support was brilliant. Even when we went behind everyone stayed very positive and got behind us.

“When you looked over behind the goal there was just a bank of people there. It was pretty special to be honest and we hope it continues.

“The noise behind the goal in the second half was brilliant and it can only spur on the lads. We wanted to win for the fans and they got us over the line.

“We hope that people come back and continue to support us, and that it’s not a one-off.

“This is our fourth season in charge, but some players haven’t been at the club very long, a month or two. The supporters are lifelong and it was more for them.

“We had to try and treat it is as a normal game and just be professional about it, and I was delighted that we were able to get our fans the win.”

Fellow manager Neil Baker added: “It’s huge. We wanted to win the game and it’s always nice when you get a late goal in front of a home crowd, which looked fantastic.

“It’s a great feeling to be honest and let’ s just hope we can get a number of these people back.

“We’re punching right up at the top of the league at the moment and winning brings people through the gates, so hopefully we can keep on going and continue to do that.

“I think there were lots of people still trying to get tickets on Monday. We probably could’ve got close to 2,000 if it hadn’t been all-ticket, but it was the right thing to do to make sure it went smoothly.

“There were a few hiccups here and there but you expect that. We hadn’t had a dry run so hats off to people like Steve Easterbrook and John Porter.

"They worked their absolute socks off and it’s great that we’ve got the three points for them.”
