Charges could be brought in at three currently free council-owned car parks in Slough under plans to bring in new cash next year.

Parking is currently free at Slough Borough Council’s Elmshott Lane car park in Cippenham, Shelly Close in Langley and Vicarage Way in Colnbrook.

But draft budget plans for next year say the council hopes to raise some £100,000 through a plan to ‘introduce car parking charges in currently free car park’.

A council spokesperson told the Observer the plan is ‘still under consideration’ and that ‘no final decisions have been made as to location or the level of charge that might be introduced’.

The increase is included in draft budget plans published earlier this month that propose £10.78 million in savings next year.

Other proposed savings that could affect drivers include plans to continue rolling out controlled parking zones, and to bring in a 20 miles per hour speed limit in Colnbrook.

Also included in the draft savings plans are a £60,000 ‘service reduction’ to libraries in Slough Borough Council’s children’s services budget, and possible closures of community hire halls.

The council has warned that it may still have to find yet more savings of up to £17.35 million to set a balanced budget.

The draft plans are on the council’s website along with a survey open to the public. The final plans will be decided at a meeting of all councillors in February.
