I am pleased that under a Labour government, free breakfast clubs will be introduced in primary schools across the country.

This plan will not only take pressure away from financially struggling parents but will ensure children have the very best start to their day, improving their behaviour, attendance and learning.

In Wales, breakfast clubs have already proven to provide children with a healthier diet and raise attainment levels. It is vital that we replicate this in England to ensure that children unlock their full potential.

Given that the last 14 years of Conservative Government have seen a spike in child poverty, and with nearly 21 per cent of children in Slough living in relative poverty, free breakfast clubs are vital.

They can help children realise their potential and offer financial relief to those who need it most. In fact, this measure alone could save parents who already use breakfast clubs around £760 a year.

Given my longstanding work against child poverty, I secured and led a debate in parliament this month to raise awareness of the meaningful benefits this system will bring for children, families and schools.
