Plans for a new block of 14 flats on the edge of the town centre have been given councillors' backing – even though they’ll have no parking.

Amrit Singh wants to demolish two houses on Wexham Road – numbers eight and ten – and replace them with a three and four storey block of flats. The proposal was approved by Slough Borough Council’s planning committee on Wednesday, October 23.

But councillor Dhruv Tomar – who works at the Royal Mail delivery office opposite the houses – raised concerns about the lack of parking.

He said: “Royal Mail has customer parking for about six cars which they have closed for the last two years because it’s used unauthorised mostly by residents.

“This has affected the customers of Royal Mail and businesses there. How is this development going to affect the parking situation there?”

But council highways officers said they considered the lack of parking acceptable. That’s because the flats are near the town centre, where the council says developers are allowed to build new homes without parking spaces.

They also agreed that the developer could pay £4,242 towards the creation of a parking bay for a car share scheme on Wexham Road.

A highways officer said the site had ‘very good accessibility by public transport modes, it’s within walking distance of Slough train station and we’ve got numerous bus services available’. He added that all of the roads nearby had parking restrictions.

Councillors voted to approve the plans unanimously.
