Work has started on new crossings after residents backed proposals to prioritise pedestrians.

The new-style crossings will boost safety in Norfolk Park after residents overwhelmingly supported suggested improvements to residential roads between the B4447 and the A308.

On October 21, work on the first of a series of improvements at three junctions began.

This follows feedback from more than 200 residents last April, backing the proposals to introduce continuous pavement crossings at three locations and reducing the speed limit to 20mph on surrounding roads.

The project, part of the Royal Borough’s plans for a cleaner, greener and safer borough, will introduce a pavement-style ramp at the junction of the roads.

This ramp gives priority to pedestrians by allowing them to continue walking and encourages turning vehicles to look and slow down by crossing the raised area.

The crossings, funded by Active Travel England and developer funding, will be introduced at the junctions of Cordwallis Road, St Luke’s Road and the B4447 Cookham Road, Australia Avenue and the B4447 Cookham Road, and between St Luke’s Road and the A308 this winter.

While providing a continuous crossing point for those on foot, vehicles will be able to turn as normal into each road.

To make these changes, road closures have been put in place at each junction.

The first closure, at the intersection of Cordwallis Road, St Luke’s Road and the B4447 Cookham Road, will last four weeks from October 21.

This will be followed by shorter road closures at the junction of St Luke’s Road and the A308 Marlow Road between November 18 and 29, and at the intersection of Australia Avenue and the B4447 Cookham Road from December 2 to 12.

A short, signed diversion route will be in place during the work, with access for residents from the end of each road.

Councillor Geoff Hill, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We’ve listened to residents who told us they wanted to see these innovative measures introduced to calm traffic and make it easier for pedestrians in the Norfolk Park area.

"I’m excited that this project is now coming to life and will help us to deliver a cleaner, greener and safer borough for everyone."

Following the introduction of the continuous crossings, a 20mph speed limit will be enforced on the following roads in January:

  •  Australia Avenue
  • Clivemont Road (southern part of)
  • Cordwallis Street
  •  Cordwallis Road
  • Denmark Street
  • Fairford Road
  • Norfolk Road
  • Norfolk Park Cottages
  • Risborough Road
  • St Luke's Road
  • Vicarage Road.
