The force behind Slough’s new market has said they would ‘love’ for it to happen twice a week – but want to focus on driving business up on Tuesday’s first.
The market launched last month as an initiative by Slough Business Improvement District (BID) and happens every Tuesday. Traders told the Observer this week that business has been good – but would be helped if the market was one more than once a week.
Now Clarissa Parker of Slough BID has said she would also like to extend it to at least two days. She told the Observer: “I’d love a few more days.
“Ultimately the end game would be to have two days of market trading at the very least. At the moment we’re focussing on bringing the trade up on Tuesdays.”

Traders at the market on Tuesday, October 15, said they would like the market to run more than once a week. Chad, who sells crystal jewellery, said: “If they’re looking to pick up business around here one day’s not enough – it needs a couple more days, maybe three days.”
Abid, who sells dried fruit and nuts, said his customers asked if the market could also run on weekends. He said: “They’re telling us if we can do weekends it will be even nicer because it’s busy. I tell them we’ll see if we can get permission to do weekends.”
And Mr George, who sells clothes, says business has been good but that customers have been telling him they’d like to see it more than once a week. He also said more could be done to advertise it.
He said: “A lot of people don’t realise we’re only here on Tuesdays. If they could put out some signs saying the market is every Tuesday people will notice.”
Ms Parker said Slough BID was working to promote the market through its social media and had put up banners advertising it on the A4.
She joked that she and market managers had branded market day ‘rainy Tuesdays’ due to a spate of bad weather since launch day on September 17. She said: “The last three or four Tuesdays have been really downcast and sadly the weather’s not been in our favour.”
But she said that the interest in the market had been ‘wonderful’. She said: “The interest in the market is wonderful. We’re getting a lot of feedback from the retailers.
“It brings life and activity back to the town centre. The more people we have coming to the market the longer it will last.”
