Changes could be made to residential parking standards as the council seeks to update its rules on how many spaces each new home should have.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead says its current rules – which say how many parking spaces new homes must have to get planning permission – are ‘no longer fit for purpose’.
The council’s current rules set a minimum and maximum number of spaces that new homes are allowed. These were set in 2004 and have not been updated since.
One bedroom homes must have a minimum of half a space and a maximum of one. The same goes for each bedroom in flats with communal spaces

Two or three bedroom homes need a minimum of one space and a maximum of two. And homes of four or more bedrooms need a minimum of two spaces and a maximum of three.
Detailed plans for new rules haven’t been drawn up yet. But an early report to councillors sets out the council’s approach to coming up with new rules. It says instead of minimum and maximum spaces, planning rules should set out an ‘optimum’ number instead.
It also suggests that rules might be different for urban and rural areas. In urban areas, it says people have ‘more opportunity to walk, cycle and use public transport’.
Councillors will get a chance to have their say on the approach to drawing up new plans at a meeting on Monday, October 21. Residents could get a say on new draft rules in spring next year.
