A former day care centre in Langley could be sold off by Slough Borough Council in its bid to raise money from property sales.

Council leaders look set to agree to put Langley Resource Centre on Spitfire Close on the market.

A report says sale of the property – last valued at £300,000 – could help the cash-strapped council ‘reduce its borrowing’ and contribute to its goal of raising new funds.

The building was constructed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to the council report, and was used mostly as a day care facility. But the report says use of the building ‘gradually declined’ and it was last used in early 2020 before the coronavirus lockdowns.

The report also says it costs Slough Borough Council £10,000 a year to run and it is not likely to earn any rental income in the future.

Council finance staff are recommending that leading councillors on the cabinet committee declare the property ‘surplus to requirements’. This would allow the council to market the property for sale as part of a bid to raise money.

Slough Borough Council had hoped to raise some £600 million from property sales after going effectively bankrupt in 2021. But property sales have so far raised much less than hoped.

A revaluation of the council’s remaining assets is set to presented to council leaders in early 2025.

The cabinet’s asset disposals committee is set to consider proposals to market the resource centre at a meeting on Thursday, October 17. If they agree, they will then recommend it to the rest of the cabinet for approval.
