Controversial plans to build four new homes on London Road were approved on a knife edge vote after one councillor warned they would cause ‘chaos’ on a ‘dangerous’ main road.

Property developer Crystal Oak was given approval to demolish 573 London Road and replace it with four homes by Slough Borough Council’s planning committee.

But one councillor on the committee said there was ‘no way’ he could back the scheme unless more was done to make it safe.

The new development would be accessed by cars through a lane leading off the main road, next to a BP petrol station.

Councillor Haqeeq Dar warned this would mean cars turning right in and out of the site would have to cross both a bus lane and a lane of normal traffic on the busy A4. He said: “I’ve been a taxi driver for 35 years. That stretch of road is dangerous and anyone coming out turning right is going to cause chaos.”

The councillor added that the right turn would be like ‘turning across a motorway’ and that he saw near misses there 'every day'. He said he could only approve the plans if right turns were banned there.

But council highways officers said cars already turn right into the BP garage. They said no accidents resulting in injury had been recorded there over the last five years.

Councillors voted by four votes against three to approve the plans on September 25.
