A campaign to 'save Pinewood Studios' has attracted over 200 signatures after news broke that the famous production complex was closing its TV unit.

A spokesperson for Pinewood, which is based in Iver Heath and is better known for its film than TV output, said this week that its TV department would close next year in accordance with the undisclosed findings of an internal review.

While its TV roster – Would I Lie To You, Taskmaster, etc – pales in comparison to the hefty James Bond and Star Wars franchises on its big-screen books, some have been caught off-guard by the move, with one person going so far as to create a Change.org petition urging the studio to reconsider.

Under the mission statement, 'Protect Pinewood TV studios from closure', they wrote: "This will (impact) an irreplaceable piece of our TV industry's infrastructure.

“From gameshows to sitcoms, Pinewood TV Studios has been delivering quality production services to a host of television programmes that we’ve all come to love and enjoy.

“This isn’t just about a studio and the opinion of ‘if light entertainment still exists’, it’s about the shows and experiences that have become a part of our lives. By signing this petition, we can tell the decision-makers that we value Pinewood Studios.

“They need to understand (that) it’s not just about profits or losses, it’s about culture, creativity and the very heart of our cherished British televisual landscape.

“Let’s urge them to reconsider their decision (and) keep the (TV unit) open.”

One signee, William France, added: "I'm a camera trainee and I need facilities like this to stay open for the possibility of work and/or the possibility that I myself will be able to contribute to its history."

And another, Steve Wright also chimed in, writing: "I believe these studios are iconic in the TV industry and need to stay active."

Alongside Bond and Star Wars, Pinewood has also played host to film productions including the Carry On franchise, Paddington and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Its TV work has generally focused on "light entertainment" in the game or variety show category, with RuPaul's Drag Race another familiar title.

The Change.org campaign, which was created on Tuesday, a day after news of the upcoming closure broke, has so far gained 213 signatures towards a goal of 500.

An industry insider who wanted to remain anonymous told the Free Press that the closure was likely either due to an influx of big-budget productions, “with no need for non-contemporaneous TV shoots to fill in the gaps between film work” or a wider drop in demand for TV projects driven by “changes to advertising revenue”.

A spokesperson for Pinewood said they had started a consultation process with affected colleagues and remain "very proud of the work the TV team has delivered over the years, having hosted many major titles for the UK's broadcasters".
