The Tesco footbridge across Wellington Street in the town centre could be demolished, plans submitted to Slough Borough Council have revealed.

Tesco applied for planning permission to demolish the bridge on August 16, and the application appeared on the council’s website last week.

Plans submitted to the council say the bridge – which has been closed since 2022 – has become ‘unsightly’ and a site for ‘anti-social behaviour’ after pedestrian crossings were built.

“The pedestrian footbridge was constructed as part of the original foodstore, which opened in 2005, and was designed to provide pedestrian access between the Store and the rest of the Town Centre,” a planning statement said.

“Since the construction of the pedestrian footbridge, a signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossing has been introduced at grade level across Wellington Street, opposite the store on the western side of Brunel Way. The introduction of this grade level crossing means that the footbridge is no longer needed."

The statement adds that ‘failures in the stairwell glazing system have meant that the footbridge is no longer fit for purpose’, and the bridge was closed in November 2022 ‘in the interests of health and safety’.

The statement also says that Slough Borough Council’s highways department contacted Tesco in April 2024 about the bridge.

It says the council told Tesco it would serve a formal notice for the bridge’s removal which was ‘unsightly and attracting anti-social behaviour and numerous complaints’.

The demolition plans are pending consideration by the council’s planning department.
