It could soon become easier to hold street parties in Windsor and Maidenhead.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council will review whether to reduce the cost of holding parties after being encouraged to adopt a ‘lighter touch’ to the application process by the government.

Street parties require temporary road closures, and the council currently charges around £700 to £800 for their administration.

Festivities were recently held in Windsor during the King’s Coronation, where 168 roads were closed across Berkshire. There were also more than 50 road closures during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 across Windsor and Maidenhead.

At a recent full council meeting at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council, resident Edmund Prothero asked whether the authority will change its position given parties usually take place on ‘quiet, residential streets’.

He asked the cabinet member for highways, transport and customer services whether the council can introduce a simpler application process.

In response councillor Geoff Hill confirmed that the authority would review its police for temporary road closures for street parties and other relevant events.

A licence is not required to hold a street party, but local councils may require an application.

The government advises that those wishing to host a celebration should get in contact with their local council at least six weeks in advance.

In the run up to the King’s coronation last May, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council advised anybody wishing to hold a street party to ensure they had a temporary road closure by February 17.
