The Greggs on Slough High Street could move to a bigger shop two doors down – filling the empty BrightHouse unit, new plans suggest.
The bakery chain has submitted plans to renovate Unit 5 at 221-231 Slough High Street, which has been left empty since BrightHouse closed in 2020.
There is already a branch of Greggs at 223 High Street, which is smaller – making it likely that this will close for the move to the bigger premises. The company hasn’t responded to a request to confirm this.
In its application for planning permission, Greggs has said it wants to fit new signs, a new shopfront, and new rollers to Unit 5. It also wants to replace the shop’s air conditioning units. Plans haven’t revealed whether there will be more customer seating.
BrightHouse closed after the firm went into administration during the coronavirus pandemic. The firm rented home electronics, domestic appliances and household furniture to people, many on low incomes, with the option to buy.
But it struggled after an influx of compensation claims to customers who it had signed up to lending agreements that may not have been affordable. It also had to make payments who had cancelled their contracts after one payment but had not been refunded.
Greggs’s planning application is pending decision at Slough Borough Council.
