Green’s Kitchen and Bar closed its branch in Windsor just weeks after opening because of a dispute between its owner and landlord, the town manager has revealed.
The restaurant – owned by chef Bradley Green – opened on Peascod Street in Windsor town centre on August 1. But it closed on August 16 citing ‘serious concerns’.
It said in a statement it made the decision to ‘protect our brand and uphold our commitment to integrity’. It added it was ‘no longer associated with this site in any way’.
Now the council’s Windsor and Eton town centre manager Paul Roach has revealed how Mr Green had told him of concerns before the restaurant even opened.
Mr Roach said: “We got into a fairly regular conversation prior to the opening and also on a number of issues that he had with trying to open, and he thought he had overcome those.
“I did receive a call from Bradley a few days before they decided to close. In essence he’s had a falling out with the landlord and the way that he would like to manage that business was not how I think the landlord would have hoped that he would manage that business.
“He decided it was in the best interest for himself and his brand that he would move on.” He added: "In all my years as town manager that unit was the quickest opening and closing I’ve ever witnessed.
“I think he took some legal advice and decided to move on very quickly."
Mr Roach gave the update at a meeting of the Windsor town forum held by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead on Wednesday, September 18. He said he’d asked Mr Green to look for other venues in Windsor but wasn’t sure whether the restaurant would reopen in the town.
Mr Roach said: “He did seem okay to do that but whether or not he will we’re not sure because he’s obviously had to take a little bit of a hit in opening and closing so quickly.
“I suspect he’s probably just tyring to review where he goes from now but he had promised me a meeting to see if there was another location.”
Green’s Kitchen and Bar announced its sudden closure in a statement on August 16. The statement said: “We became aware of serious concerns, which are not in line with our values and standards.
“In light of this, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw our company from this location to protect our brand and uphold our commitment to integrity.
“We want to clarify that we are no longer associated with this site in any way. Our priority is to maintain the trust and confidence of our customers and staff, and we will continue to focus on providing you with the highest standards of service at our other locations.”
