The MP for Slough has voted against a Conservative led effort to keep winter fuel payments for retirees.

Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, the Labour MP for Slough voted against an opposition motion to block restrictions to winter fuel payments in Parliament.

The payments were introduced by the Labour government in 1997 as a universal benefit to help elderly people with heating coats in the winter months, with payments of up to £300 being made.

The new Labour government that swept to power in the general election this year has chosen to limit the payments to the elderly in receipt of pension credit, with chancellor Rachel Reeves arguing the benefit should be focused on those most in need.

But the Conservatives and opposition MPs launched a last ditch effort to maintain winter fuel payments to all pensioners in what is called an 'opposition day motion'.

However, the motion was defeated, with 335 MPs voting against it and 213 MPs voting for it.

Labour MPs were whipped to vote against the motion, as the government has argued savings need to be made to plug a £22 billion gap in finances. Scrapping the winter fuel payment is expected to save around £1.3 billion for the 2024/25 financial year.

Slough MP Mr Dhesi sided with the government in the vote. Meanwhile, Jack Rankin, the Conservative MP for Windsor, and Joshua Reynolds, the Liberal Democrat MP for Maidenhead both voted for the failed motion.
