Community spaces play a vital role in our society, providing educational, cultural and recreational services to people from all walks of life and, crucially, filling in the gaps where the state often cannot reach.

However, in Slough, they are under threat from a community asset grab. Slough Borough Council, under its Conservative and Liberal Democrat administration, had indicated that The Curve would be a target of proposed cuts. Fortunately, due to the actions of campaigners and an outcry from the Slough community, the Council has reversed its decision to close this cherished community space, which was paid for by residents.

Unfortunately, the Council has now proposed a reduction in The Curve’s operating hours, which would be devastating loss to many of my Slough constituents, who use it for services such as the library and theatre.

After 14 years of Conservative government mismanagement, the new Labour government is working hard to ensure people have a say in their local area and as announced in the King’s Speech, Labour’s Take Back Control Bill will enable us to treasure our community spaces.
