Slough ‘must stand together in the face of hate consumed thuggery’, Labour MP Tan Dhesi has said following a series of racist riots across Britain.

Mr Dhesi said he had been contacted by people ‘worried about hate and violence blighting our town’ in a statement on Wednesday August 7. He reassured residents that there are ‘no planned demonstrations yet in Slough’ and criticised ‘unhelpful false rumours.’

He said: “Across the UK over the last week we have seen the disgraceful discrimination, Islamophobia and vandalism of those who want to reject cohesion and espouse division.

“We must stand together in the face of this hate consumed thuggery, showing our strength as a peaceful, kind and welcoming community – one that accepts differences, rejects division and takes pride in our diversity.”

Mr Dhesi added that he was in ‘regular communication’ with Thames Valley Police ‘to ensure the safety of each and every one of my constituents'.

He said: “While there are no planned demonstrations as yet in Slough, there are unhelpful false rumours circulating on social media. I have therefore been contacted by many constituents worried about hate and violence blighting our town.”

Mr Dhesi added: “I know that in these times of anxiety and tension, Slough will remain a shining example of hope and unity. A community which comes together as one and says no to racism, no to Islamophobia, no to violence and no to hate.”
