Plans to build a new detached house on a residential street have been refused for the second time.

Gagan Grewal wanted permission to demolish a single story annexe to a house on Clifton Rise on the Laing estate in Windsor and replace it with another detached home.

But planning officers at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead said its design was ‘contrived’ and out of character for the area.

Kiran Grewal spoke to councillors on behalf of her brother, urging them to approve the plans. She said houses on the area already had a variety of styles.

She said: “In the last 30 years there’s been a lot of aesthetic changes that have occurred so what was once a relatively uniformed estate, now each property has its own character and there are very few properties that actually match.”

But council planning officers disagreed. They asked councillors to vote against the plans at a Windsor and Ascot development committee meeting on Thursday August 1.

And they noted that previous plans had already been refused in 2023 on the basis that a detached home was out of keeping with the area.

Officers said: “The proposed dwelling has a large front gable which is not characteristic of the area, and numerous eaves heights resulting in a convoluted roof form.

“As with the previously refused application, the principle of detached dwelling on this plot is not considered to be in keeping with the character of the area.” Councillors on the committee voted unanimously to refuse permission.
