Slough Council is urging residents to dispose their food waste sustainably after only a quarter of members of a new trial took part this week.
The authority recently launched it’s ‘Kit the caddy’ scheme which collects food waste from five areas in the borough. It centres around the fictional 'Kit' food bin which wants to 'munch' on waste.
Households taking part have two caddies. The first is a small one for indoors and a larger one for outside, but both can be used for all types of food waste.
The trial is being rolled out in the hopes that it could be extended across the whole borough.
Up to 40 per cent of contents of a normal refuse bin are food waste, according to Slough Borough Council.
Collections take place weekly, on the same day as normal times, on Monday July 1.
5.5 tonnes of food waste were collected from across trial areas, but only a quarter of residents in these locations took part.
Parts of Britwell, Chalvey, Langley, and most of Colnbrook and the Diamond Road estate form the trial areas.
Food waste can be disposed of in plastic bags in the provided caddie – including small bin liners or shopping bags.
It will then be broken down to use for energy and fertiliser.
The council is urging more residents in trial areas to take part. Cllr Gurcharan S Manku, in charge of environmental services, said: “Kit is still hungry and loves the taste of your food waste so much that he wants more!”
