A lower speed limit along parts of the A4 through Slough is finally set to come into force next week following a delay.
The speed limit along the entire length will be 30 miles per hour (mph) – down from 40 miles per hour along some stretches – starting from Monday, July 22. The speed limit at the A4 Colnbrok bypass will be 50mph, down from 60mph.
Slough Borough Council says the changes are intended to make the road safer. Councillor Paul Kelly, responsible for highways and transport, said: “These revised speed limits are the start of a wider programme of road safety countermeasures to make the A4 and other roads safer.
“Other changes will include average speed cameras, red-light camera systems, road surface treatments, improved pedestrian and cycle crossings, removal of roadside hazards and decluttering of street furniture.”
Slough Borough Council’s cabinet – its group of leading councillors – approved the changes eight months ago in November 2023.
The new speed limits were originally set to come into force in February this year. But the council paused the rollout after a complaint from a resident who said the change would ‘severely impact’ their travel times to work and to the hospital where they received regular treatment.
The council considered the objection and set it aside in March this year. The council said the resident lived in an area where nearest section of the A4 was already 30mph.
