Windsor Leisure Centre has unveiled a new 'Changing Places' facility, tailored for disabled individuals and their carers.

Larger than traditional accessible toilets, these rooms include a height-adjustable changing bench, toilet and wash basin, along with a track hoist on the ceiling and a shower with a privacy screen.

The facility is spacious enough for wheelchair users to easily navigate.

The installation is the result of a collaboration between the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead and the Leisure Focus Trust at Windsor Leisure Centre located on Stovell Road.

Conveniently, the inauguration coincided with Learning Disability Week, with this year's theme focusing on visibility, audibility, and value.

Andrew Durrant, Executive Director of Place Services at the Royal Borough, said: "We believe that no one should live a life with limitations, especially when taking part in physical activity at our leisure centres.

"Changing Places are designed to be completely accessible and provide sufficient space and equipment for people to use the facilities independently."

Sharing similar sentiments, Adrian Moorhouse, chair of trustees for the Leisure Focus Trust said: "We’re absolutely delighted that we’ve been able to install a Changing Places facility at Windsor Leisure Centre.

"This facility will mean the centre is more accessible to many more children, adults, schools, community groups and families.

"We're grateful to the partnership with the council, and funding partners, who’ve made it possible for these important improvements to improve access to facilities in Windsor."

The innovative facilities are not just for disabled individuals but are also available to the general public.

Further details, along with opening hours of this and other such facilities across the Royal Borough, can be found on the Changing Places website.

Victoria Holt, Community and Development Manager at Optalis, the council’s adult social care provider, praised the venture, saying: "It’s great there’s now a Changing Place facility at Windsor Leisure Centre.

"It means that people with a disability and/or additional needs and requirements can access their community more easily and with dignity."

There are three Changing Places in Windsor, including Windsor Castle and Lego Land Windsor.

The facilities are open, Monday to Friday (6am – 10pm) and Saturday/Sunday (8am-6pm).
