Plans for a new science lab and design workshop at a special school in Burnham have been submitted to the borough council.

Haybrook College wants to add eight new classrooms to Millside School at its site at Burnham Road.

The application states: “The proposed addition to Millside and Millside extension accommodates eight classrooms, two of which are a science laboratory and a design technology workshop.”

There will also be a courtyard in the middle of the new blocks that will ‘provide pupils and staff with a safe, natural environment to enjoy the soft landscaping provided.’

The plans are still being considered by Slough Borough Council’s planning department. It comes after council leaders decided this to rush through proposals to build four new classrooms at another special school, Arbour Vale in Farnham Royal, by September.

Council officers say there is an urgent need to ensure Slough has enough spaces for children with special educational needs in coming years.

Neil Hoskinson – the council director in charge of education – told council leaders earlier this month that the borough needs to build a new special school.

He said the council had ‘some ideas’ about meeting the increasing demand for special school spaces in coming years but ‘the game changer is a new school – that’s what we need.’
