A week long closure of a road in Maidenhead town centre is set to take place to enable the final stages of a demolition project.

The former Broadway multi-storey car park in Maidenhead was found to be structurally unsafe after it was closed in December 2022.

Now the structure is undergoing a staged demolition, which began in mid-May.

The safety of Broadway car park was first cast into doubt when an element of the ceiling collapsed.

Following extensive surveys, the car park was found to be "beyond its economic life".

The phased demolition has since seen scaffolding embody the 1960s car park, before shops to the structures left and the main body of the car park having been demolished.

Now the spiral to the car park's front is the last remaining element of the car park set to be torn down this week.

This will include the closure of the current designated Broadway access lane (adjacent directly to the former car park) with the right-hand lane along Broadway being open to enable traffic to continue to access the town centre.

A full road closure will be in place on Broadway from Tuesday, June 4 to Thursday, June 13, daily between 9am to 3pm (though with no weekend closures) in order to enable the safe demolition of the staircase tower. The footway on the opposite side will remain open.

A diversion for motorists will be in place during this time via A4 Frascati Way, A4 Bad Godesberg Way, A4 St Clouds Way, Forlease Road, Bridge Road and High Street.

Councillor Geoff Hill, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “As with any large-scale demolition project in a busy built-up area, there is likely to be some unavoidable disruption to undertake these works safely, but we’re striving to minimise this though taking a phased approach to closures and avoiding full closure at the weekends."

Several bus routes will be impacted by the closure, with information about alternatives set to be posted at all bus stops.
