There is a ‘genuine chance to elect a Labour MP’ in Windsor, the party’s general election candidate for the constituency has said. But the Conservative candidate says people in Windsor ‘don’t know what you’re getting with the Labour Party’.
Pavitar Mann – who is leader of the Labour group on Slough Borough Council – launched her election campaign at a rally of party activists on Thursday, May 23. She said a ‘collapse in Tory support’ and changes to constituency boundaries gave her a chance of winning.
She said: “As a local resident, I know that our community deserves better than the past 14 years of Tory decline. With significant boundary changes, and the collapse in support for the Tories, there is a genuine chance to elect a Labour MP in Windsor.”
But Rankin – who is standing to succeed current Conservative MP Adam Afriyie – urged people to stick with the Tories.
In a message as the election was announced he said: “You don’t know what you’re getting with the Labour Party and we don’t want to go back to square one.”
He said the economy had started to improve under prime minister Rishi Sunak – and that people in Windsor would start to benefit.
He said: “We’ve just seen the news today that inflation has fallen to 2.4 per cent – this is the prime minister over delivering on his plan and I think people recognise that this is going to flow through into the real economy too. Cost of living pressures easing and that will flow through to mortgage rates.”
