Plans for six new classrooms have been approved at The Westgate School.

It comes after the school outlined how it would replace a house it owns with two buildings on Cippenham Lane.

The first building will include a multipurpose hall with kitchen and two offices, while the second building will include a toilet block and six classrooms set around a grass picnic area.

A main office will also be situated in the new development.

To do so, The Westgate School applied to knock down a three bedroom mid-century house to build on the land.

The home had previously been occupied by the school caretaker, but has been vacant since winter 2021/2022.

During the planning process it was highlighted that these buildings would be located opposite The Long Barn pub and The Great Barn, which are both Grade II listed.

Westgate School hope to use the classrooms for "small groups or one-to-one teaching" to make up a "shortfall" in teaching space for children that require additional support..

Plans for the classrooms show between four and 10 seats per room.

Slough Borough Council have approved the plans, but imposed over a dozen conditions on the school.

These include a requirement that the work must take place in the next three years - any longer and a new planning application will need to be submitted for approval.

The school is also only to use the facilities Monday to Friday.

Now the plans have been approved, Westgate School can set about the development.

A new pedestrian gate will be created on the south site boundary (Cippenham Lane) and the southeast boundary will include a new palisade fence that will create a passageway allowing students to access the main school via Cippenham lane.

The planning documents add: "The school would like an auxiliary space incidental to the main School building, which gives them an alternative learning environment to focus on children that require additional support.

"The buildings are required to deliver flexible teaching space that could be used for small groups or one-to-one teaching, and for pupils with special educational needs.

"The school anticipates that the spaces will be used for purposes such as isolating disruptive students and providing one-to-one support away from the busy main school buildings."

The Westgate School is a mixed secondary school attended by approximately 1,000 children aged 11 to 18.

It has been rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted since an inspection in March 2014.
