A resident has claimed that ‘eight to ten’ streetlights on a road in Denham have been broken for more than six months – ‘plunging’ the area into darkness each night.

The resident first brought the issue to Buckinghamshire Highways’ attention on November 21, 2023, when they posted a photo of the unlit service station junction on the A40 in Tatling End.

In response to a post detailing the council’s plans to upgrade streetlights around the county, they wrote: “What about fixing streetlights that don’t work and plunge junctions into darkness?”

The same user returned to X/Twitter this week to renew their appeal to the council following six months of inaction after their initial request.

Claiming that “eight to ten lampposts” on the road were still out of order, they said: “Since tweeting in November 2023, the streetlights here are still broken.

“The road and junctions in and out of the service station are (regularly) plunged into darkness – so dangerous!”

Multiple reports have also been made on the council-affiliated platform Fix My Street drawing attention to the broken streetlights in Tatling End since the beginning of the year.

A spokesperson for Buckinghamshire Highways said the issue had been passed on to its street lighting team.

Steven Broadbent, Cabinet Member for Transport at Buckinghamshire Council, said highways crews had fixed over 1,000 broken or damaged streetlights between April and December last year.

Speaking in December 2023, he said: “We have more (streetlights) on our list to fix and work continues to achieve this.

“The majority of the outstanding jobs are reliant on waiting for the correct parts to be in stock or for additional work to be undertaken by the responsible electricity company. Once available, we will complete these repairs as quickly as possible.”

About this site specifically, Mr Broadbent said: “We are aware of faults with lighting at this location; we have visited the site this week and are programming in repair works, treating this as a priority. We hope to have these works completed in the coming weeks."
