A giant observation wheel could soon return to Windsor under plans set to be deliberated by councillors.

Proposals to install a temporary 35-metre-high wheel in Alexandra Gardens will be considered by the Windsor and Ascot Development Management Committee next week.

If approved, it would be in place between March 15 and September 9, 2024 – and open to the public between March 22 and September 2.

The additional days outside the public opening dates would allow time for setting up and dismantling the wheel.

The planning officers’ report reads: “The observation wheel would have an overall height of 35 metres and would be sited on the southern side of the central pathway which runs east/west through the Gardens.

“The level of harm caused to the adjacent Conservation Area would be less than substantial.

“This harm would be outweighed by the public benefits of the proposal which include benefits to the town’s economy from the increase in the visitor numbers to the area.”

The wheel would be in operation between 11am and 9pm on weekends and holidays and between 1pm and 9pm during off peak weekdays.

There would also be a refreshment kiosk next to the wheel on a decked area.

Planning officers have recommended that the application be approved, citing its potential economic benefits to the town.

The officers’ report adds: “Notwithstanding that the proposal is in a sensitive location, the proposal is for a temporary period only and considering the associated benefits to the local economy and town centre, the scheme is acceptable.

“The application complies with the relevant policies set out in the adopted Borough Local Plan.”

It is set to be discussed by councillors of the Windsor and Ascot Development Management Committee on Thursday, January 4.
