There is “no appetite” in Slough for a ULEZ-style scheme to expand into Berkshire, the town’s MP has claimed.

Labour’s Tan Dhesi told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he does not believe people in Slough wish to see the controversial clean-air scheme extended into the Home Counties.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone, which expanded to cover every London borough in August, sees motorists with more polluting vehicles charged £12.50 per day to drive within its boundaries.

But Slough’s MP reiterated his calls for further financial support to aid residents burdened with these additional costs.

He said: “People in Berkshire and people just outside London also need financial support. It’s all very well saying we need to change to more environmentally friendly vehicles.

“But if they are just about managing in a cost-of-living crisis, they need help to make that more environmentally friendly decision.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan expanded the ULEZ in a bid to reduce air pollution in the capital, but critics of the scheme have lamented the cost burden on motorists.

A scrappage scheme to replace non-compliant vehicles is available to London residents, but no such support exists for Berkshire.

This scheme allows Londoners to claim a grant of up to £2,000 to replace a non-compliant car or up to £1,000 for a motorcycle.

Mr Dhesi previously wrote to the Transport Secretary along with other Home Counties MPs calling for scrappage funds to be made available to areas surrounding London.

He added: “If the likes Bristol, Birmingham, Bradford can get support, then Berkshire and those areas surrounding London should be getting support as well.

“But Slough is not London. I don’t think there’s the appetite here or any sort of political will to implement any sort of ULEZ scheme here.”

The London ULEZ was initially introduced only in central London in 2019, but has subsequently expanded twice to reach its current boundaries.
