A Royal Borough councillor has spoken out after his Facebook was disabled with little explanation.

Councillor Wisdom Da Costa, who represents Clewer and Dedworth West ward for the West Windsor Residents Association, said he was given “no explanation” after he found he could no longer access his account.

A message told him: “We’ve determined that you are not eligible to use Facebook. This decision is final.

“Unfortunately, for safety and security reasons, we can’t give you any additional information as to why your account was disabled.”

The councillor expressed fears that his absence from Facebook could hinder his ability to connect with the residents he represents on the council.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he does not know why his account was disabled.

He said: “It's alarming that local councillors have said to me that they are now more reluctant to post on Facebook.

“I hope that Facebook can take steps to becoming more available to ordinary people to help resolve issues.”

Councillor Da Costa is one of two councillors on the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council representing the West Windsor Residents Association.

The WWRA’s stated aims are to safeguard the interests of residents, promote just governance and render assistance where possible.

Councillor Da Costa added: “I will switch to Nextdoor for the foreseeable future and also write more on the WWRA website at http://westwindsorresidentsassociation.org.uk

“Residents should also reach out to me on cllr.dacosta@rbwm.gov.uk.”

Facebook’s parent company Meta was contacted for comment but has not responded at time of publication.
