Residents have been left disappointed at the news that a historic pub will be closing its doors at the end of the month.

The Herschel Arms, located on Park Street has been a Slough staple since it opened in the 1860s.

Now 159 years down the line, the popular Irish eatery and public house has announced the sad news that it will soon be closing.

The current landlord, Tom King, took to Facebook to make the announcement, which said that the pub will see out its last day on August 31.

Tom added: “It’s a common reason these days unfortunately an inability to agree on rent. Nobody’s fault really but a sad day."

Residents were quick to express their devastation by the news, with Anthony Joseph saying: "Another part of Slough's history and identity removed."

Gary Mac added: "Really shocked when I saw Tom the other day and he told me this sad news.

"Really sad to hear it's closing. Tom is a great landlord and always looks after the punters."

"I will always cherish the memories I had in there," added Simon Tyler.

Mark Donovan said: "So many great memories from the past, sad times."

Many have commended Tom for being a lovely landlord, bringing a piece of Ireland to Slough and offering a welcoming atmosphere to all.

Others worried for the future of the landmark, with Sara Fairhurst stating her concern that the building will be knocked down and turned into more flats.

The Herschel Arms isn't the first pub long time Slough staple to have faced difficulties this year, with The Three Tuns having closed in June.
