Slough Borough Council have confirmed the sale of Wilko as concern is raised about the future of the store.
On Friday, May 12, an urgent meeting was held by Slough Borough Council after the disposal of the asset was deemed "time critical" to "protect the Council’s commercial interests".
A week later on Monday, May 22, the council said: "We can confirm that following a competitive marketing of the site which generated a great deal of interest, we have accepted an offer and are progressing with that offer."
The Wilko store, situated in unit 233-249 on the High Street was bought by the council for £3.775million in 2019.
It is known to have been let to the major high street retailer for £259,608 annually.
Slough Borough Council revealed that Wilko currently has an unexpired lease on the property, with approximately six years remaining on it.
The Observer contacted Wilko to enquire as to the future of the store after the news.
A Wilko spokesperson said: “The sale of the unit does not impact our lease and we plan to continue helping Slough shoppers get their household and garden jobs done.”
