A MAN who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in Slough sent her a text afterwards saying he was going to kill himself, a court has heard.

Keegan Edwards is on trial at Reading Crown Court with one count of a rape and one count of assault by penetration. On the first day of trial (Wednesday, April 16), the 22-year-old pleaded guilty to a third count of assault by penetration.

The court heard that the alleged incidents for the other two counts occurred on February 21, 2021 against a girl who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Prosecuting Rebecca Austin read out texts sent from the defendant after the alleged incidents which read: “I’m going to kill myself.”

Opening the case, Ms Austin said that after the alleged incidents that the defendant’s ‘reaction was to run’. He travelled to Portsmouth where he threw away his phone which he told police he did out of ‘anger and sadness’.

The girl reported the alleged incident to the police and Edwards was later arrested.

He was interviewed for a total of one hour and 40 minutes where he first denied all the counts. He told police he was ‘disgusted’ by the allegations and ‘had no words’.

Edwards later completed a defence statement ahead of court proceedings where he alleges that what took place was consensual and ‘something she wanted to do’.

Ms Austin told the jury: “But she was 14 which is below the legal age of consent.”

Text messages between the defendant and the girl were read out by the prosecution in which the girl tells Edwards he has ‘f***** up’ her life and asks him to not to talk to her.

Edwards replied: “I’m literally going to kill myself. I’m sorry.”

The girl tells him not to do that and he responds: “But you hate me now and if anyone find out, I’ll be killed, you know it.”

In a later text exchange, the girl asks him ‘why he did it,’ to which Edwards responds: “I thought you wanted that. I never would have hurt you otherwise.”

The girl replied: “I didn’t want that.” Edwards text back and said: “I will do whatever I takes to make this right.”

A forensic analyst was taken from samples provided by the girl after she reported the alleged incidents and a scientist concluded that the findings provided ‘very strong support’ for the girls’ version of events.

The trial for Edwards, of Redhill Drive in Bournemouth, continues.
