PLANS to use a Grade II listed building for prayers and rituals have been approved by Slough Borough Council despite objections.
The Old Barn in Cippenham Lane, which dates back to the 17th century and has been empty since 2019, will be converted for religious purposes.
It was purchased by Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Digambar Jain Charitable Trust. The registered charity belongs to a sect of the Indian religion Jainism called Digambar.
Jainism is an ancient Indian religious group that the applicant says teaches devotees “how to live a peaceful lifestyle”.

However, the plans were met with some objections from residents, who said they were not provided a consultation period, while others raised concerns over increased traffic and potential noise.
One resident said they “have not been fully informed” of the plans in advance of the application being submitted and called it “an absolute disgrace” that it is being considered.
A Slough planning officer said that the plan could be considered acceptable “in principle” as it would “attract positive weight in terms of a future use and upkeep of the listed building” but did note concerns over the potential impact on local amenities and highways.

Last year, the council said the applicant has agreed to extend the time to determine the application to address various issues raised by the local authority.
The former commercial building will be used Monday to Friday from 7am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm, and 7am to 8pm on the weekend.
It also includes increasing the number of car parking from 13 to 33 and providing cycle racks.
