A NEW top council boss, who could earn up to £185,000 a year, is set to be appointed next week.

Royal Borough council leader Andrew Johnson revealed Stephen Evans will be taking the reins from interim chief executive Tony Reeves in April if full council approves on January 24.

Mr Evans will be leaving his £156,000 role as chief executive at Norwich City Council after three years of service.

The Royal Borough hired Tony Reeves, the former chief executive of Liverpool City Council, for six months following the departure of Duncan Sharkey in October.

Mr Sharkey, who was the borough’s chief executive since 2019, moved on to take the reins as chief executive of Somerset County Council following a ‘high profile national search’.

Cllr Johnson said: “Stephen, who is currently chief executive of Norwich City Council, is an outstanding candidate and will bring a wealth of experience to the role, including strategic and corporate leadership and working effectively with key partners to affect change and improvement.

"He has broad and varied experience across a wide range of areas, including policy, housing and regeneration, commercial ventures, climate change and social care.”
