SLOUGH Borough Council is eyeing to add more street closure schemes at two schools – with more to follow.

The local authority and its sustainable transport team Better By have been experimenting with school street schemes at different schools to encourage parents and pupils to take up active travel.

This involves closing down certain roads near a school to limit motor vehicles accessing the site during drop-off and pick-up times.

Residents and businesses who live and work on the School Street, as well as Blue Badge holders, are exempt.

The council announced last month it made Wexham Court Primary School’s trial on Moat Drive permanent.

Headteacher Navroop Mehat said the school suffered from poor parent parking and speeding vehicles but thanks to the scheme, pupils are able to walk to school safely and comfortably.

Following the trial’s success, the council revealed it is speaking to two additional schools, with more to follow, to implement the school street scheme. However, it could not reveal the names of the schools yet.

A Slough Borough Council spokesperson said: For the council to consider a school to become a school street depends on a number of location factors as well as the need for commitment from the whole school community (school staff, parents, pupils and the local community).

“We are unable to name schools as yet, as we have to carry out further consultation with ward members before announcement. The School Streets manual is now on our website and is full of further general information School Street – Slough Borough Council .”
