FEARS an ice rink at Alexandra Gardens could “damage” the historic park prompts a councillor to ‘call in’ the planning application.

Over the years, Royal Borough residents and tourists have visited and enjoyed the ice rink and the family funfair operated by Windsor on Ice during the Christmas period near Windsor town centre.

The applicant, David Coleman, has submitted plans to temporarily set up the attractions from November to January for a period of three years.

This also includes 11 rides such as the Helicopter ride, Race O Rama, Twister, Bungee, and more. New attractions are also proposed, including Monster Trucks, Trooper, Apple Coaster and Avengers.

Eton and Castle ward councillor John Bowden (Con) ‘called in’ the application to be determined by members sitting on the Windsor and Ascot development management panel.

He said the site is situated in a “unique setting” in Windsor and affected residents should be aware of its impact before, during, and after its installation.

The scheme has also seen some backlash from nearby residents, who fear the attractions will be too noisy, pollution from the diesel generators, and that it will damage the historic green open space land.

One local wrote: “The effect on the gardens is that simply provides a real eyesore for months from when the construction starts through to the period of the “attractions” and for months afterwards when this public area is cordoned off to try to allow the area to regrow.

“The gardens are damaged by heavy vehicles arriving and driving over the ground and then machinery and rides being sited on the soft ground damaging the area for months at a time destroying the environment."

Another wrote the noise from the attraction is “very unpleasant” and “unbecoming” for this quiet area next to the river and historic park.

Separate plans to temporarily install an observation wheel and refreshment unit at the Gardens from July 1 to September 30 are still being considered by officers.

Councillors will decide the ice rink’s fate on Wednesday, May 4.
