A KNITTING group has been taking Slough by storm after creating colourful post box toppers to be displayed around the town.

Knit Your Socks Off, which has been running for almost six years, is a team of up to 25 people who meet up and make special knitted items for charities and events.

Co-founder Sbba Siddique said the idea came from when her friend, who was diagnosed with cancer, told Sbba how her feet got cold when she was undergoing chemotherapy.

Sbba then knitted her friend some bright pink socks for her to wear and she said this got a lovely reaction from other patients.

Sbba then decided to knit more pairs for patients at Wexham Park Hospital and the group took flight from there.

For the group’s March project, the knitters teamed up with HOME Slough and were commissioned to be part of the LOVE Slough festival.

The aim of the festival is to celebrate all that’s good about the town.

Sbba said: “The aim of the post box toppers is to brighten up Slough with some woolly love, people absolutely love them and they’ve made them smile."

Families have been spotting them around the town and even posing for a selfie with them.

The seven different post box toppers around Slough can be found on Slough Trading Estate, Cippenham Primary School, Carlton Road near the mini Tesco roundabout, Whitby Road, Langley Road, Asda in Cippenham and Wexham Road.

Each topper also has a theme to it including love, to represent the LOVE Slough festival, spring, and even a life-sized chicken, called Hettie, surrounded by lots of chicks.

Other parts of the Knit Your Socks Off project include displaying a tree of love and hope, which can be spotted in The Curve.

People can go up to the tree and take a knitted item home as a memento.

And the group has also placed knitted pockets around local parks and outside schools for people to go out and find.

Sbba added: “We just want to brighten up people’s days, and all the toppers also have a card on about the LOVE Slough festival and a short poem about being proud of Slough.

“All of our ladies are volunteers, we love it, and we never ask for people to donate money to our group but if they wish to they can donate wool to us.”
