70 OAK trees were planted in Windsor today to mark the celebrations of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Representatives from Ascot Racecourse and the Crown Estate gathered in the Royal Procession Route at Windsor Park on Tuesday, March 22.

This is part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative established for the Platinum Jubilee year.

Her Majesty’s Representative and Chairman, Sir Francis Brooke Bt., alongside the senior team from the Crown Estate, including Director of Rural, Paul Sedgwick were invited along to plant the final set of trees.

The 70 trees will be adjacent to the Royal Procession Route along the Duke’s Ride in Windsor Great Park and will be intertwined with existing, mature oak trees.

John Oliver, Superintendent of Windsor Great Park and the Royal Estate said: “This is a classic example of great partnership between Ascot Racecourse and the estate.

“This part of the procession is where the Queen moves from her car to carriages when arriving at Royal Ascot.”

Sir Francis Brooke Bt., Her Majesty’s Representative and Chairman at Ascot, said:

“Planting these trees has been a tremendous joint venture with the Crown Estate. They complement the existing oaks on Duke’s Lane, replenishing that section of the Royal Procession route as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Plant a tree for the Jubilee’ project.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming local children, and their parents and teachers, from the 70 schools, on 10th May for what will be a fantastic community occasion.”

Paul Sedgwick, Deputy Ranger & Managing Director of Windsor & Rural, Crown Estate, added:

“We are delighted to be working with Ascot on this important project. As a part of The Queen’s Green Canopy project, we have also planted two new avenues, each of 70 trees in The Great Park. These avenues, together with the trees planted today with the team from Ascot, will be a lasting reminder of the unique and historic occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”

Each great oak was chosen from a local tree nursery and each will be dedicated to 70 local schools.

Timothy Griffith, Headteacher, Ranelagh School, said: “Ranelagh School is delighted and honoured to be one of the schools lucky enough to be chosen to have a tree dedicated to us as part of the 70 new oak trees in Windsor Great Park.

“At the heart of our school’s culture is our commitment to being a dynamic learning community that is rooted in Christianity. As such, I cannot think of a more appropriate project for us to be involved in. On behalf of Ranelagh School, may I take this opportunity to congratulate Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee.”
