A RECREATION ground in Slough has gained a new sign, but it’s been spelt wrong.

Horsemoor Green Recreation Ground, on Spitfire Close, has had a new sign erected but a word has been spelt incorrectly.

It has been spelt Horsemoore instead of Horsemoor and one councillor isn’t happy.

Independent councillor Madhuri Bedi (Foxborough) said: “I raised my concerns about the park signs as I could not, and still cannot understand why, at a time of great financial crisis when all expenditure has been stopped, suddenly Slough parks have new swanky signs.

“How and why has this suddenly become a priority, requirement, or statutory obligation?”

Cllr Bedi sent many emails to the council on behalf of Foxborough residents with small requests, but always gets an email saying it’s not possible due to the council’s financial situation.

“Last September I sent an email to the council about a street sign that had fallen and needed to be placed back, not replaced, just repaired, yet I was told the sign would be added to a list of future works and once funding is available saying they will raise an order," she said.

Cllr Bedi explained she has also had park benches sitting within some council premise for months as she was told there are no funds to have them installed.

She said: “These benches were requested by Foxborough residents and purchased through my Community Investment Fund and yet they cannot be installed within the very same parks in which these signs have been changed.

“There seems to be no funds for the quick fixes requested by residents, who are the taxpayers of Slough and who we all stand to serve, yet funds have been found to change all of the parks signs.”

Cllr Bedi added there was “no need” for the new sign and said residents would have preferred the funds being spent on what was really needed.

“However, if they were going to do it, they should at least have given residents the respect of spelling the parks name correctly,” she said.

“As a councillor who wholeheartedly stands shoulder to shoulder with residents, and fights there every corner, I am appalled at the insignificance with which residents are treated.

“It was residents who informed me of these signs and the incorrect spelling, what could I say to them when I had no knowledge of this?

"The question is not only why they were placed without councillors being informed, the question is why and how this has happened, under whose authority and what was the total cost of this throughout all the parks in Sloughs' 15 wards.

“Sadly, this is not the first time that the actions of Slough Labour group have had me bowing my head in shock and despair.”

A Slough Borough Council spokesperson said this sign is part of a large borough wide project.

They said: “The project was requested to update signage and ensure bylaw signs were in parks as they are not easily enforceable without.

“This was signed off and the order placed well before the S114.

“The sign company are very kindly correcting it with a wrap free of charge.”
