GROUND has finally been broken at a major development site in Maidenhead to build over 400 flats after a shaky start.

Construction has begun today (Dec 15) at the Landing site, which is near the town centre and a part of the town’s regeneration, developer HUB and investor Smedvig have announced.

The first phase is to be carried out by contractor JJ Rhatigan & Company to deliver 429 build to rent homes for operator Get Living and is expected to be completed in 2024.

Ger Ronanyne, CEO of JJ Rhatigan, said this was their “biggest contract so far in the UK”.

The initial phase will also deliver 23,000 sq ft of ground-floor retail, as well as car parking and extensive new public realm on a prominent 3.5-acre site in Maidenhead town centre.

Two further phases will also deliver 104,000 sq ft of office space, another 15,000 sq ft of ground-floor retail and leisure space, and a new garden square including soft landscaping, trees, and seating areas.

It has been a rocky start for the developer since plans were given the go-ahead back in 2019, with HUB securing the remaining land from property owners following a public inquiry to progress with the scheme earlier this year.

Damien Sharkey, Managing Director HUB, called this a “landmark moment” for the company as it delivers a “pivotal site” for Maidenhead.

He said: “We are very excited to have started construction on this fantastic new place that will bring beautifully-designed, well-connected homes, employment opportunities and community facilities to the town centre.”

Councillor David Coppinger (Con: Bray), cabinet member for planning and Maidenhead said: “The council is driving forwards the much-needed regeneration of Maidenhead town centre, and this ground-breaking is another major milestone, hot on the heels of our railway station forecourt revamp.

“With £155m of private investment, The Landing will provide longer-term benefits including new homes, jobs and facilities that will enhance vibrancy of the town centre, support further major investment and boost the whole community.

“In the short term, the construction work itself will deliver immediate benefits, including opportunities for local sub-contractors, suppliers and construction workers, work placements and talks for local young people supporting careers into the construction industry, and simply the spending power of 350 extra site personnel in town.”
