JACKET potatoes have been a big hit in Slough and for the past 30 years they've been a 'highlight to people's lives' in the town.

That's according to the one and only 'Jacket potato man', Jack Hughes, who has owned a stand in the middle of Slough High Street for three decades.

Mr Hughes earns a living serving freshly cooked spuds seven days a week with his sister, brother and his wife.

Luckily, the street trader has had massive support from members of the community and Slough Borough Council.

It comes after a petition circulated online calling for the authority not to stop street traders from operating in the High Street.

Jack shut down these rumours and said the potato stand is 'here to stay'.

He said: "We've had lots of people ask about us and it's [petition] complete rubbish. We're still doing well, although it has been a bit quiet recently as there's less people about.

"I think we do well because we're friendly and everything is made daily and cooked fresh. We have a laugh with people and get to know everyone, I've had people say to me that coming to get a potato is the 'highlight of their week!'.

"It's also different. When you go to McDonald's you leave and it's already cold. They stop here and it's cooked fresh and hot."

In 1991, Jack's brother owned an ice cream stall but it wasn't doing as well as it could.

He didn't take in money and at the time there was a potato stand operating next to him.

"My brother noticed next to him this potato stand and asked the woman about it", Jack said.

"She explained how she was thinking of getting rid of it so he bought it off her. We've been going ever since and it's been out livelihood."
