TV's hotel inspector at Grenfell Arms pub in Maidenhead

The Grenfell Arms based in Oldfield Road, Maidenhead, recently featured on Hotel Inspector, where Alex Polizzi tries to improve struggling hotels and suggests how to revamp them.

In the series opener, Alex found herself walking into an awkward situation between Landlord Jamie and his mum Sandy.

The pub has also suffered due to the increase in competition in the town with new businesses opening up.

The rooms were described by Alex as ‘tired and grimy’. She also commented on the state of the bathrooms and said the extraction fan was 'pretty disgusting'. More thought on gimmicky lighting than basic cleaning was how the show described the rooms.

The car park was also described as 's***' due to the rubbish and materials left lying around.

But following a several week transformation in 2019, the pub was overhauled and eventually won over the residents and owners in what could be the show’s biggest successes.

The Grenfell Arms is one of the oldest pubs standing in Maidenhead with Jamie coming from a family with hospitality experience.

However since Jamie and his mum started working together their relationship has become broken and 'vicious'.

Hotel inspector Alex said it was something she was going to have to tackle in the show if the business had any standing chance of success.

A lack of staff and chef has seen Jamie having to work in the kitchen instead of being able to work on improving the business.

However when Alex spoke to punters they had nothing but kind words to say commenting on how 'friendly' they are.

A 'contemporary take on a traditional pub' is the idea the hotel inspector had in mind to improving the place.

They changed the contrasting blue and yellow walls, removed some of the 'mismatched' design.

She said: "I believe the space now has a clear identity that can start pay dividends for Jamie as he begins to get a grip on his finances."
