The current lockdown might limit close-up social contact. But a newly married couple have found the ideal way to make friends with their neighbours - by staging a concert in their front garden.

Jo and Matthew Allman, of Upton Road, Slough met when she went travelling in 2016.

He is from Barbados - she met him on her second day there and cancelled all her further travel plans.

Since coming over to England with his new wife Matthew has been building a career as a singer in pubs and clubs in the area - but work has dried up during the lockdown.

Jo said: "We thought it would be a nice idea to do a free gig for our street and on Facebook live, starting at 7pm and finishing at 8pm in time for the weekly clapping of carers.

"We made it a request show and took requests all week on Facebook - we had requests from all over, including Matthew's family in Barbados."

The neighbours all came out last night to enjoy the concert and applaud - all safely 'socially distanced' of course in their own gardens.

Jo said: "The amazing thing is I have lived in Upton Road since 2006 but it has taken lockdown to get to know my neighbours.

"I met more of them last night than I have in the previous 15 years. It truly was a lovely evening and someone even left a big Thornton’s Easter egg on our doorstep afterwards to thank Matthew."

Jo used to be Jo Wright and is a former president of Slough Chamber of Commerce and governor of Castleview Primary School in Woodstock Avenue. She has three grown up children.

She has been through a rough time recently, when a trapped nerve in her left her temporarily paralysed. She underwent 20 operations.

But Matthew is building up Facebook contacts and hopes to continue rebuilding his singing career as soon as the lockdown ends.
