Published on 12/06/2013
Gerald Arthur Hughes Died peacefully on 8 June 2013, aged 81. He was the dearly loved father of Graham, Colin and Stephanie, and their nine children, two stepchildren, and their partners. He was also the dearly loved partner of Ruth, along with her children and grandchildren. All will deeply miss his kindness, humour, unstinting support, and steady wisdom. He lived a full and fruitful life, as a retail pharmacist in the Reading area, as a prominent Berkshire county councillor where he led the education committee for 17 years, and as a leading Rotarian and active member of several Masonic lodges. He led walks for the Ramblers Association, and played bowls and bridge with various clubs in London and Reading. We will celebrate his life at a memorial service at 3pm on 17 June at Park Church, Wokingham Road, Reading. No flowers please, he asked for donations instead to his two preferred charities, to be found on the JustGiving website, or text POPP49 and amount to 70070.
